Serenity on Lake Lillinonah, Bridgewater, Conn.

On a gray afternoon in August, the reflection of the clouds and sky in the water created a gentle monotone modified only by the soft ripples and divided by the line of hills in muted green.

From Storm to Rainbow, Bridgewater, Conn.

The storm clouds moved in, the wind kicked up and blew my umbrella insideout. Rain, lightning, then just as quickly the sun poked through. I knew there would be a rainbow. I turned around and sure enough there it was.

Summer Mist Rising, Bridgewater, Conn.

Out in the early hours near Lake Lillinonah, I headed to the water’s edge to capture the rising morning mist illuminating the shadows.

Clouds Rising, Bridgewater, Conn.

Out in a thunderstorm, I was hoping to capture some flashes of lightning, but the storm passed over too quickly, and I was left to watch as this majestic cloud rose out of the valley, moved toward me and engulfed the trees as it dissipated into a mist that blanketed the field. In a moment, it was gone.

Clouds Aloft, Bridgewater, Conn.

All the elements of clouds, sky and field conspired to make me stop in the midday heat to photograph. The clouds brushed across a sweeping sky like a gauze veil that softened the contrast just barely. The three trees popped up from their own shadows and the long line of the cornfield and distant trees etched the dark stroke needed to provide, with the leading gray of the foreground, the full tonal range of an ideal black-and-white image.

Waiting for Hay, Roxbury, Conn.

The line of hay wagons on the hill in Roxbury was the work of an orderly farmer — or maybe he was just showing off for photographers like me.

Patterns, Bridgewater, Conn.

Patterns

Funny how sometimes minds do think alike — or in this case, they see alike. My eye was drawn to the patterns on the hillside and the rhythm of lines and textures in the wall and fence. Lo and behold I find my friend Steve Willard stopped to photograph the same scene. Hilarious. But like it or not, the photos are completely different. You can check it out for yourself at his blog: stevenwillardimages.wordpress.com — the image entitled is “Why.”

Waiting…for Lunch, Bridgewater, Conn.

The red-tailed hawk and red-winged blackbird seemed strange companions when I made this first image. In the time it took for me to take a quick look at the back of my camera and look up again, the hawk had caught lunch — frog legs were on the menu.

Canada geese stick together as couples and I have been watching this pair for a few years now. Last year, they had six offspring. This year I have been keeping track ever since mom showed signs of expecting. Today, voila, the proud parents showed off their newborns.
